Checker Car Club of America

The Checker Model Y was sold from 1935 to 1939. When introduced, you could purchase it with either a Lycoming 8 cylinder or Continental 6 cylinder engine.

 

Fifteenhundred Checker taxis were produced in 1935. In 1936 Yellow Cab of Chicago orders 3,500 taxis from Checker. 

 

In 1937 E.L. Cord sells part of his shares in Checker to Morris Marking. Both are accused of stock manipulation but are later exonerated. New York City passes the Haas Act the same year. This creates the taxi medallion system and limits the total number of taxis in the city.

 

In 1938, Checker hires Ray Dietrich (of Chrysler fame) to redesign the Checker assembly line. Work also begins on the next generation Checker, the Model A.
